Höhere Technische Bundes- Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt (HTL) Bregenz, Austria

The HTL Bregenz is not a university but a higher vocational school at secondary and post-secondary levels. It uniquely comprises three elements of higher education and training, totalling 185 hours in five years:

  • general education (humanities),
  • science and engineering subjects,
  • workshop and laboratory practice.

In addition there are eight compulsory weeks of practical work placement in the relevant industry during summer holidays. Finishing that school at A-level + 1 with a diploma project and maturity exam entitles our students to skipping the first semester or even year at some technical universities (applied science universities or polytechnics).

Within the EQF / NQF process the Austrian Ministry of Education is currently taking measures within an extensive quality assurance programme to prove that this unique type of school rather exceeds European standards of vocational education and training at secondary level and thus would have to rank very high within the envisaged credit system (ECVET).
